Leaving Jimmy

Leaving Jimmy for a younger, sexier, hipper man was one of the hardest things I ever did.  Soon after I gave Jimmy an impressive forty dollar bottle of wine for our twentieth anniversary I began to look for someone new.  Twenty one years is a long time to spend with a man, especially if that man is your hairdresser.  But the last five years of commuting to maintain the relationship had begun to wear on me, especially after we brought Keziah home.  When I told my husband Peter that I was leaving Jimmy for Ed he was genuinely surprised.    “I feel like I’m cheating on Jimmy,” I whined to Peter after going to some local Ed for a hair consult.   Peter looked amused.  He understood my devotion to Jimmy as well as any bald man can appreciate the relationship between a woman and her hairdresser.  “I feel terribly guilty,” I added, “but driving an hour and twenty minutes one way for a hair cut is just too much, even if it is Jimmy.” Peter just nodded sagely and tried to look sad.
